After talking to many people in Torbay, we have found that a lot of older people wish to remain independent and stay in their homes for as long as possible.
Many feel their talents, skills and knowledge are going unrecognised and undervalued and Staying Put aims to acknowledge and appreciate one of Torbay’s biggest unrecognised resources by enabling over 50-year-olds to retain their independence by assisting one another with tasks many take for granted.
Staying Put will be working alongside a group of organisations, each working to deliver particular assistance and volunteering opportunities:
- Torbay Community Development Trust (lead)
Offering general help and support – buddying, help around the house, and getting out and about
- Brixham YES
Offering a low cost DIY/handy person and gardening service across Torbay, covering small tasks such as light bulb changing, curtain hanging or weeding and small garden tasks.
- Age UK Torbay
Offering volunteer training and befriending support
Using a Staying Put volunteer Advocate, seAp will offer support and representation for people to have their voices heard and be involved in decisions about their lives.
The Staying Put volunteer Navigators will provide information and practical advice about local health and social care services.
- Ellacombe Community Café
Offering a cooking buddy service across the bay, supporting people to cook and eat at home with lessons and new skills menu planning and on-line shopping
