By Leah Whitcher, Community Builder for Torre & Upton
Hello again. Isn’t it lovely to see our beautiful Bay thriving this summer?
When I finally managed to spend some quality time on my patch delivering the last of the community magazines, I dashed to Torquay harbour on my way home to The Family Bread, Torbay’s very own proper French bakery – sadly too late, it was closed when I got there – and it was fantastic to see everything so busy.
It’s been so lovely to spend proper time in Torre and Upton over the past few weeks, which I feel I haven’t been able to do for ages, partly because of pretty much everywhere being off-limits and uncertain.
It’s heart-warming to see familiar faces and places active again.
It really is starting to feel like normality is returning with all sorts of groups, activities and events already up and running.
Torbay’s social calendar is filling up before my eyes.
For example, The Agatha Christie Festival at Torre Abbey is from September 11 to 18 – not strictly my patch but so close that I always recommend it as somewhere lovely to go for Torre and Uptonians – and my ‘Drop In and Chat’ at the Noble Tree every third Thursday of the month.
And opportunities for getting involved in your local community are appearing again.
For example, those who want to share their love of reading and want to pass that skill on to others can now volunteer at Upton St James Primary School in Upton.
They would love to have you go in and regularly read with some of their children from September onwards – DBS check needed unless you have a current one.
There are also a couple of opportunities in Torre for the green-fingered.
The beautiful Greek Orthodox Church of St Andrew – a haven for wildlife as well as a lovely green space to spend some time – needs a few hours a month to help keep it looking splendid.
And the raised beds in Brunswick Square need a hand or two to keep them looking colourful and tidy.
Lastly, if you want to be part of a small group of neighbourhood litter pickers, give me a shout. Call 07703 715 235.
