Coming up at this year’s Ageing Well Festival…

By David Gledhill, Marketing & Communications Lead,

IT is done! After months of hard work, the programming for the Ageing Well Festival 2019 is complete.

Ten months of graft by a dedicated team of volunteer over 50-year-olds have produced a bumper programme of events, talks, demonstrations, music, dance and sports.

We are confident that the Festival committee has produced what will be their best yet, having learned lessons from previous years, refined some and polished up the very best bits for this, the fifth event.

We are very aware that some of you may have been put off by some of the issues thrown up at last year’s festival caused through no fault of our own when the venue had to be switched at the last minute.

Access, parking and public transport options were not ideal, and once in the building, we were hindered by a multi level, multi-floor split venue, not helped by a wheelchair lift that repeatedly stopped working with people in it.

This year, however, we have settled on one of the best-known buildings in the Bay – The Riviera Centre in Torquay, which can be accessed very easily by car, bus, train and even ferry if you were so minded to travel by boat from Brixham.

A big plus of using the Riviera Centre is that it is ideal for wheelchair users with several lifts, ramps and easy access to all floors and just about every nook and cranny.

And we are using as much of it as we can to deliver a cornucopia of events, and entertainments to make sure your day is a full one. So much so that we would advise getting hold of a programme as soon as possible to allow you to plan.

We genuinely have something for everyone. Once again we have a fantastic line up of dance, music, talks, pampering and fashion, exercise and relaxation all tailored with the over 50’s in mind.

We have stalls and advice stands in a huge exhibition hall, so there is plenty to get your teeth into including numerous organisations manning stalls as well as a community safety section, and an advice corner.

In another large hall we have ex-club circuit comedian Vic Boulton compering some of the best talent that the Bay has to offer – there will be some familiar faces, but lots of new ones as well.

We have another room dedicated to emerging talent from Brixham, Paignton and Torquay performing music, poetry and more  – all loosely themed under the Ageing Well’s Got Talent banner

There are plenty of things to try in our arts and crafts workshops – create your own masterpiece – be it a dreamcatcher, a crocheted piece, or a bit of weaving and take it home.

As usual, we have talks throughout the day – ten in total covering everything from keeping yourself from online scams to a revealing delve into the cinema archives which reveals Torbay’s place on the big screen.

New to the Festival is the fashion, pampering and wellbeing section with, among other things, a fashion catwalk featuring clothing from Sainsbury’s Tu clothing line. There are also a variety of taster sessions and demonstrations involving hair, makeup and massage.

As always there is chance to try our a variety of sports and exercises including belly dancing, pilates, walking football, table tennis and badminton.

In total we have hundreds of hours of things to do, and that is why you need to start planning soon in preparation for the doors opening on Saturday, October 19th at ten o’clock prompt.

The music is from the fifties, sixties, seventies and eighties – feel free to sing along or dance your heart out but most of all just enjoy yourself because as an over 50-year-old living in the Bay, the festival is all about you.

As we pulled this programme together, we concentrated on the words that have become our mantra – Love, Live, Laugh and Learn.

We have been running festivals since 2014 – each has been bigger and more ambitious than the last – and we are hoping that this year we have built on all that to make this the most successful yet.

Afterwards, if you think we have missed something or there is something you really want to see at what could well be our last festival next year then please do join our hardworking committee who will start on the 2020 programme within weeks of this one ending.
