Thursday 1st Oct is International Older People’s day and the official launch of Ageing Well Torbay, a 6 year, Big Lottery funded project to reduce social isolation amongst people over the age of 50. Ageing Well aims to reconnect communities across Brixham, Paignton and Torquay, so everyone can feel included and valued.
“Older persons make wide-ranging contributions to economic and social development. However discrimination and social exclusion persist. We must overcome this bias in order to ensure a socially and economically active, secure and healthy ageing population.”
Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon
About International Older People’s Day:
On 14 December 1990, the United Nations General Assembly designated 1 October the International Day of Older Persons. The main aim of the day is to celebrate the achievements and contributions that older people make to society and the economy and to challenge negative attitudes.

Encounters Arts
FREE / Please book as spaces are limited
Suitable for all
Grandmothers is a unique interactive performance created by Encounters Arts with a company of Grandmothers drawn from Dartmouth, Totnes and Paignton. Experiences, ideas and thoughts coming from the group are woven together to create a public performance event that will tour to the three towns in October.
Encounters Arts are offering an opportunity to ‘Meet the grandmothers’ during the Ageing Well festival. The event is open for up to 20 members of the public to join a creative conversation about ageing and grandparenting, as well as participate in a creative workshop and contribute words, images or questions to the final Grandmothers performance.
The event will start with afternoon tea served by some of our core company of grandmothers, leading into a creative conversation and sharing about the experience of grandparenting (and parenting) today, as well as about ageing well. Participants will then be lead by our artists in creating their own response to the themes in the form of words or images that will be added to the show.

Throughout the 4 days of the festival there will be two commissions popping up in various locations across the Bay.
Across the Tracks
Kate Rudman / Sound Communities
Intergenerational music and story sharing / live radio show over different locations – young and old sharing their music in a ‘spin off’
Sound Communities will roam the festival with young and old radio makers, recording, audio blogging and broadcasting conversations, memories and stories. Parkfield Xtreme Radio’s young producers will support older trainees to produce and present a daily live broadcast from all around Torbay. We encourage anyone interested in learning about radio to bring vinyl, old photographs of yourselves and your local area and interesting objects to describe and talk about to make a wonderful local soundscape for future generations to treasure. These broadcasts will be available to listen to immediately again online.
A series of interconnected films exploring Ageing Well
Nick Fogg
Nick will be creating a series of films challenging perceptions about ageing – some of which will be shown during the festival and some will be filmed during the festival.
