Covid-safe activities opening up across the Bay – Community Matters

By Gill Knight, Community Builder for Paignton South – Goodrington, Roselands, Hookhills, Broadsands, Galmpton and Churston

As we all try to get back to our new normal, your local community builders are getting out into their communities and will be staging pop-ups near you to get your ideas and help you find an activity, group or event that you might like to attend.

Organisations across the Bay are working hard to make things Covid safe, and accessible for clients old and new, and more things are taking place outside, with yoga on the beach in Preston, Goodrington and in front of Torre Abbey.

Exercise classes are also planned for local parks, alongside outside coffee mornings, games sessions and friendship groups in different locations.

In my local patch stretching from Goodrington and Roselands to Churston and Galmpton, Hookhills Community Centre is making plans for a safe opening once lockdown is lifted on May 17 and will then advise on regular group activities.

Lupton House is currently creating a safe space outdoors for some activities, including Bollywood Dancing on a Tuesday and Wednesday morning.

Reach Outdoors have continued to offer activities for everyone, Including a ladies’ paddleboard session, and the leisure centre is hoping to offer more as restrictions ease and the golf driving range is open for business as usual.

For those who have been shielding and not been out for a while, we have a series of short walks happening from various locations, focussed on enjoying our local natural beauty and gaining confidence in a small group.

These will happen every Friday for five weeks from May 14, walking around a mile, for approximately an hour, followed by refreshments.

Come along, have a stroll and a chat, and enjoy the fresh air – all part of Active Devon’s Naturally Healthy May campaign – call me – number below.

Churston Library has done a great job keeping in contact with people and hopes to restart some of its regular groups including knit and natter outside, and Goodrington St George’s Church is hoping that some of their groups may open up again from early July.

If you know of any other activities starting soon, or want further info on the above, please call Gill Knight, community builder on 07884 887063.
